Citing Your Sources

There are two citation styles used most frequently at Montgomery College: MLA and APA.

  • MLA Citations are usually used in English, History, and other non-science courses.
  • APA Citations are generally used in Psychology, Nursing, and other sciences.

Even so, check your assignment or ask your professor which citation style to use for your class.

When writing your papers, you always need to cite the sources you've used in two places:

  • in the paragraph where you have quoted, summarized, or paraphrased from the source (called an in-text citation)
  • in your Works Cited list (MLA) or Reference list (APA)

The in-text citation is very short, and gives the reader what she needs to find the complete source information in your Works Cited or Reference list.

See the links below for examples of how to cite different kinds of sources in MLA and APA format.
