SPAN 201 Reflection & Research Paper Assignment Guidelines:

1. Una comparación entre la vida en El Salvador y tu vida en los EE. UU:  All SPAN 201 students will participate in a class to class virtual Exchange with students from the University of El Salvador (UES). Afterwards, they may choose to video chat with a UES student one on one. Students will choose ONE of the themes and talk with your UES “videopal” about how this theme plays out in his/her community/university/country. Students conduct research on the theme as well. Additional research help can be found on the El Salvador tab.

2. A traditional presentation:  Students may choose to investigate one of the themes listed in the SPAN 201 Presentation Guide.

3. El aprendizaje de Servicio a la comunidad /Service Learning:

Service Learning combines community service with classroom instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civil responsibility. Students completing the service learning option will utilize their Spanish-speaking skills to work with a community organization in a Spanish-speaking community in Montgomery County.

Students who choose the Service Learning option will have a slightly different approach to the presentation. 

  • A student must complete a minimum of 15 volunteer hours at an approved SL site.
  • In addition to volunteering your time, you will also conduct research on the organization and a specific issue/topic related to the community served.
  • You may consider interviewing an individual associated with the organization. This can be a staff member, community member, another volunteer, etc.
