Find Books & More in the MC Library Catalog (How to): Home

What is the MC Library Catalog?

Use the Montgomery College Library Catalog to find books and e-books, CDs, movies (DVD or streaming), and print copies of magazines and journals. You cannot find articles through MC Library Catalog. Anyone can access the Montgomery College from on or off-campus.

You may also find these materials through RaptorSearch, by selecting “Catalog Only.”

How to Search the MC Library Catalog

This guide will focus on the Basic Search screen (the main screen that you see when you open the full Library Catalog), but other ways to search include: Advanced, Title, Author, Course Reserves, Journals, and New Titles.

Enter your keywords into the search box and choose a search type:

  • Keyword (AND): Searches for all of your keywords, in any order.
  • Keyword (OR): Search results will contain at least one of your keywords, but not necessarily all of them.
  • Title: Searches for your keywords (in any order) only in the title of each item.
  • Subject Keyword: Searches the Library of Congress Subject headings. Displays a list of titles.
  • Author Keyword: Searches the Author’s name. Displays a list of titles, arranged by author.
  • Journal Title: Searches for your keywords in the Journal Title field.
  • Call Number Browse: Displays a list of Library of Congress call numbers, beginning with what you entered in the search box. The title is displayed below each call number. This search does not work with filters or limits (see below).
  • Subject Browse: Displays an alphabetical list of Library of Congress Subject Headings that begin with your first search word. This search does not work with filters or limits.

Make Your Search More Specific

You can search for materials at a specific location, by format, or from a certain time period.

From the Basic Search page, click on the Show Only menu below the search box. Select one of the options: Only Germantown/ Rockville/Takoma Park Silver Spring; Electronic Books; Last 5 Years; Videos; Recorded Music; Textbook Reserve.

View Your Search Results

Your search will produce a list of titles, authors, or subject headings. In a keyword or title search, your results will show some of the location and availability information. Click the links to see more information about an item.

Filter your search results
After you search, you can narrow your results. Use the links in the Filter Your Results menu on the right side of the screen to view results only from a specific campus, only e-books, etc. You will see a new results list, and can remove or add more filters from there.

Request Items from Another Campus
If a specific book, DVD, or other item is available at a different campus Library (e.g., you take classes at Germantown and a book you need is at Rockville), you can request to have the book sent to your campus.

From the item’s record page, click on Make a Request. Log in with your MC ID number (including the letter M) and last name. Items usually arrive at a campus within four (4) business days. You will receive email confirmation.

Check Your Account and Renew Materials
You can check your library account and renew most materials online. Go to the My Account tab at the top of the MC Library Catalog screen, or the Renew Books & More icon on the Library's home page. Log in with your MC ID number (including the letter M) and your last name.

Use Call Numbers to Find Books on the Shelf

Physical books are arranged in the library by call number. These strings of letters and numbers are like addresses which help you locate materials in the library.

The call number assigned to an item indicates its subject matter, author and title. MC Library resources are arranged by Library of Congress call number system. Our bookshelves are arranged and labeled in alphabetical order.

Look for the row of bookshelves labeled with the same letters as the first letter or letters of the call number you find in the library catalog. For example, the shelf labeled B-BD would contain the call number BC15 .S54 2013.

On the spine of the actual book, the call number will be written vertically:
