February is Black History Month!

MC Library is proud to celebrate Black History Month by honoring the achievements and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. In this guide, you will learn about Black History and receive several book and video recommendations. You will also find helpful research databases and resources from MC, as well as local, and national sources, all dedicated to Black History.

Thurgood Marshall: A Trail-Blazing Civil Rights Victory in Montgomery County

Listen to an illustrated talk about civil rights icon Thurgood Marshall who delivered an early blow to school segregation right here in Montgomery County. This little-known legal case is often seen as the first step in Marshall’s successful drive to have separate schools for white and black children declared unconstitutional.

Learn about Step Dancing

In celebration of Black History Month, join us for a demonstration of step dancing from the Howard University Step Team.

Film: Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round

Watch a documentary film covering the 1960 protests resulting in the desegregation of the Glen Echo Amusement Park. Come and witness the historical treasure of a prominent local cultural institution in honor of Black History Month.

Malcolm X Assistant Peter Bailey at MC

In honor of Black History Month and the approaching 60th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X, please join us for Q&A with Mr. Peter Bailey, the longtime journalist, activist and one-time assistant to Malcolm X.
